According to the Worldwide Quarterly Storage Software Tracker, published by IT industry analyst IDC, revenues in the sector amounted to almost $3 billion (£2 million) during the three-month period.
The organisation explained that this represents an increase of 3.3 per cent on the same quarter in 2009, but is 2.3 per cent down on the revenue recorded in the opening three months of 2010.
Laura DuBois, programme vice-president of storage software at IDC, commented: 'The gains in the storage software market in the second quarter were largely the result of overall growth from some of the large suppliers.'
She added that the strongest revenue gains were seen by companies such as EMC, IBM and NetApp.
Last month, research by IDC claimed that spending in the global IT market in the first half of 2010 recovered from the recession better than was anticipated.
