
Research published by Barclays, the Open University and professional organisation ACCA showed that 48 per cent of small enterprises now use smartphones for business purposes.
Steve Cooper, managing director of Barclays Business, said that the increasing power of the mobile devices and their falling cost is encouraging small firms to adopt them.
'We've reached a point where smartphones are running many of the applications that once needed a decently powered laptop,' he commented.
Professor Colin Gray of the Open University Business School added that the country's more entrepreneurial companies appear to be the ones that are driving the adoption of mobile technologies.
Earlier this year, industry analyst Frost & Sullivan claimed that 85.4 million smartphones will be shipped in the western European market by 2014.
