Skills shortage 'could be created by UK migration'

Skills shortage
The UK could be left with a significant skills shortage if large numbers of migrant workers decide to leave the country, it has been claimed, which may create opportunities for those seeking new IT jobs.

Recent research carried out by HSBC found that 67 per cent of expats living in the UK believe the economy is worse than it was at the start of 2009 and seven per cent are now actively looking to return to their home country.

Commenting on the findings, a spokesman for the Trades Union Congress said that migration levels are usually a good indicator of economic health and claimed it is encouraging that so many expats still reside in the UK.

However, he added: 'If large numbers of workers leave the UK, the economy will be left with damaging skills shortages that could further hamper our prospects of recovery.'

The representative suggested that the government and the country's employers should invest more in skills to avoid this problem and protect the UK's international competitiveness.
