Stephen Overell, associate director of the Work Foundation, pointed out that many government departments are already starting to make redundancies, but it will not be clear where the bulk of cuts are to be made until the spending review is announced in November.
'We are expecting the effect to be felt starting in late autumn, but actually it will affect the next two years at least, probably beyond that,' he explained.
Mr Overell also claimed that the impact of the public sector job losses could be more severe in some parts of the country than others, as more of their workforce current holds government and local authority jobs.
According to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics, there were 2.46 million people unemployed in the UK in the three months to June.
