The research also suggested that the IT services and outsourcing market will have to adapt to an increasingly globalised economy, while enterprise systems will have to be designed to be oriented to the consumer.
In addition, the study said that the growth of cloud computing will change how IT companies operate and deliver services to their customers.
Gartner research vice-president Benjamin Pring commented: 'These forces are radically reshaping the fundamentals of how providers deliver and sell IT services and how buyers consume them.'
Last month, Gartner claimed that worldwide spending on IT by businesses is likely to grow by 2.9 per cent over the course of 2010 to exceed $2.4 trillion (£1.5 trillion).
