
According to Gartner, the server market will experience a compound annual growth rate of 5.5 per cent for shipments and 2.4 per cent for revenue between 2010 and 2014.
While servers are believed to only consume around 15 per cent of direct energy in data centres, the rising amount of heat generated will mean cooling equipment is needed.
Rakesh Kumar, research vice-president at Gartner, said many people in IT jobs are already dealing with such issues in their current setup.
He added: 'Virtualisation and consolidation projects will help offset some of these issues, but with the snowball effect that these issues tend to create within an organisation, users need to act quickly.'
