Technology market researcher Gartner revealed that spending in the global IT services market fell by 5.3 per cent last year, dropping from $805 billion (£531 billion) in 2008 to $763 billion.
The report also showed all of the major IT services providers saw revenues decline in 2009, with IBM experiencing a 6.6 per cent fall, HP 10.4 per cent and Fujitsu 0.4 per cent.
Kathryn Hale, research vice president of the worldwide IT services group at Gartner, said providers had to change their strategies last year to protect revenue rather than aggressively pursue sales opportunities.
She added: '2010 will be a year of focused readjustment for IT services providers. The discipline exercised in 2009 leaves the industry profitable and relatively nimble.'
Last week, industry analyst IDC predicted that the European IT services market will see 2.2 per cent growth during 2011, after going through fragile recovery this year.
