A study published by industry analyst Gartner and the Financial Executives Research Foundation showed that 42 per cent of IT departments report to their CFO rather than the chief executive or other senior decision makers.
Furthermore, 53 per cent of CFOs said they would prefer it if their organisation operated in this way.
John van Decker, research vice president at Gartner, commented: 'CFO reporting can lead to success if the CFO has a deep understanding of IT's value.'
The report also found that senior financial executives in 41 per cent of organisations believe they are the main decision makers when it comes to IT, while in three-quarters of groups they have an essential role in determining the amount to be invested in technology.
Last month, Silicon.com editor Steve Ranger claimed that IT projects will have to show a faster return on investment if senior management are to be convinced to fund them.
