Recession 'turned firms to VoIP'

The recession caused businesses to examine their telecommunications strategies, an expert has claimed.

Tan Aksoy, chief executive and founding director of Telappliant, told the UC Expo that many companies looked at ways to reduce their costs during the economic downturn and this caused some to consider solutions such as VoIP.

He explained: 'They've now stepped back and thought 'I can use VoIP technology, get rid of my [Integrated Services Digital Network] lines and reduce my costs by so many per cent'.'

In addition, Mr Aksoy told IT network managers that they can achieve benefits other than costs savings from VoIP, such as the ability to work from home without negatively impacting on productivity.

A recent study by consulting firm Infonetics Research found that communications providers are experiencing a surge in interest for hosted VoIP services.

The report also claimed that companies are looking to hosted VoIP because it allows them to access high-quality communications tools without making a large capital investment.
