The Recruitment and Employment Federation (REC) recently held a forum that suggested the UK's firms could learn from the LOCOG, the group responsible for staging the Olympic Games, about putting diversity at the core of recruitment strategies.
Sarah Gordon, REC chair of diversity and inclusion, said the decision by senior managers to improve diversity often do not filter down to the departmental level.
'Line managers who ultimately make the recruitment decisions need to understand why diversity is important,' she added.
She recommended that companies establish a network of diversity champions and ask line managers to report to their human resources department on how inclusive their teams are.
Earlier this month, the REC launched its new manifesto, which called on parliamentary candidates to pledge policies that will boost new job creation and reduce burdens on employers.
