Job searches 'should be as wide as possible'

Candidates should follow a few simple steps when attempting to find their next IT jobs, it has been recommended.

Employment guidance resource Careerplan4.me advised people to make use of traditional job seeking methods such as joining a recruitment agency and warned them against applying for every vacancy which they see.

In addition, the organisation claimed candidates should widen their job search by speaking face to face with people who may know of vacancies, while social networking websites can be another source of opportunities and contacts.

'Make yourself known, secure contracts to earn interim money or volunteer to keep active. All experience can be used as a positive to sell yourself,' the website added.

It also recommended people stay abreast of developments in the industry they want to work in, as this will allow them to identify individuals and companies worth working for.

Last month, an article in the Scotsman advised IT job candidates to tailor their CV for each position, as this will allow them to demonstrate why they are the person the recruiter is looking for.
