Job interviews 'can throw up surprises'

Those seeking IT jobs should be prepared for surprises when being interviewed for a new role, it has been recommended.

Writing on heraldnet.com, Eve Nicholas pointed out that common pitfalls, such as being delayed by heavy traffic, can be avoided if the applicant prepares well enough in advance.

However, she admitted that some surprises cannot be foreseen and have to be dealt with as they arise, such as an interviewer who asks tactless or argumentative questions.

Offering solutions to this problem, the writer said: 'Don't allow yourself to feel intimidated. As long as the interviewer doesn't cross any illegal or unethical boundaries … your calm demeanor will demonstrate confidence and maturity.'

Ms Nicholas also claimed that interviewers being switched at the last minute is another common interview surprise. To prevent this being a problem, she recommended preparing to be interviewed by a chief executive even if they expect to be seen by a human resources manager.

Recently, businessman James Caan wrote in the Daily Telegraph that thorough preparation is essential for a successful job interview.
