Firms 'need guidance on paternity leave'

Plans increase paid paternity leave need to be fully explained to companies before their introduction, it has been claimed.

In the Labour Party's 2010 manifesto, which was launched earlier this week, it was pledged that paternity leave will be increased from two weeks at full pay to one month.

Commenting on the proposal, Confederation of British Industry director of employment policy Katja Hall said it is 'right', as it reflects the change in traditional caring roles which is being seen in society.

She also said the move would allow families to be more flexible in their childcare responsibilities, but stressed the need for this to be communicated effectively to employers.

'Businesses do their best to support flexible working styles and will adapt to new challenges, as long as the plans reflect employers' need for clarity and certainty,' Ms Hall added.

The Conservative Party manifesto, which was published yesterday (April 13th), proposed a new system of flexible parental leave which could be shared as couples see fit.
