According to the latest Google virus and spam trends report, there has not been a significant fall in spam levels in recent months despite major botnets such as Mega-D, which infected more than 250,000 computers, being closed down.
Commenting on the findings, 7Safe course manager Jerome Smith said many of the technologies designed to tackle spam are not able to identify the plethora of ways emails can disguise the content of unsolicited bulk messages.
'The problem is that the fundamental technology for sending email isn't secure in terms of authentication - that is, how can I be sure that this email really is from company ABC?' he explained.
Mr Smith also said workers need to be aware of the dangers of spam and stop clicking on emailed links which they are unsure about, as this encourages scammers to send out further messages.
