Automotive suppliers based in Taiwan are positioning themselves to dominate growing markets s such as in-vehicle infotainment systems and LED lighting, it has been suggested.

Writing on sae.org, Terry Costlow highlighted a number of mergers and new developments from Taiwanese companies to strengthen their position in the $4 billion (£2.7 billion) auto parts sector.

Mr Costlow noted that PC and board supplier Micro-Star International merged with Funtoro, which makes a range of electronic systems for vehicles, two years ago to enter the automotive sector.

Vincent Lai, vice president of marketing development at MSI, told the website: 'We see automotive electronics and PCs moving together.'

In addition, the article pointed out that radio head unit manufacturer E-Lead Electronics seems to be shifting its focus to in-vehicle infotainment systems which include iPod, Bluetooth and USB connectivity.

Mr Costlow also said that Taiwanese firms like Giantlight Traffic Supplies Instrument Co are looking into ways to improve LED lights used by vehicles.

Recently, Canadiandriver.com assistant editor Jil McIntosh claimed that advances will need to be made in battery technology before electric cars become a popular option among drivers.
