According to a recent report from Symantec, three-quarters of companies have been hit by a cyber attack in the past 12 months, with IT departments citing virtualisation as one of the key concerns.
Commenting on the research, David Jevans, chief executive of security firm Ironkey, claimed that authentication should be the main way firms are looking to safeguard their systems when using virtualisation and cloud computing.
He explained that 'many of these break-ins seem to be occurring [by] stealing passwords from one site and using them somewhere else,' which could be prevented if companies boost authentication measures.
The expert also said that data encryption is another important IT security step, as it could prevent cybercriminals from using information if they breach corporate networks.
However, Mr Jevans claimed that it would not be cost-effective for companies to have one set of computers for banking and another for general tasks, but pointed out that virtualisation can be used to create secure environments which allow sensitive jobs to be carried out in isolation.
