Phone interviews 'require professionalism'

IT job applicants should treat a phone interview with the same level of professionalism as they would a face-to-face meeting, an expert has pointed out.

Paul Bailo, who runs online coaching service Phone Interview Pro, told CNNMoney.com that phone interviews are becoming an increasingly common way to screen potential candidates.

'Companies are so inundated with job applications that phone interviews - a relatively fast, cheap screening tool - have become the norm,' he explained.

Mr Bailo recommended that people wear business attire when they are being interviewed over the phone, as this will allow them to get into a professional mindset.

In addition, applicants should take notes throughout the conversation so they have a record of what was discussed what the interviewer seems to be interested in.

The expert also said that people should not jump to the conclusion that the IT job is not for them during a phone conversation, as the full story about a position often does not emerge until they reach their face-to-face interview stage.

Gareth Lloyd, director of career development consultant Workthing, recently warned IT job applicants to avoid putting too much 'waffle' on their CVs.
