Mobile market 'to continue expansion'

The increased popularity of mobile broadband and smartphones are likely to drive further growth in the mobile market, which may create new IT jobs.

IT industry consultancy IDC revealed that the mobile sector is currently worth around $850 billion (£545 billion) a year and accounts for 57 per cent of the global telecommunications industry's revenue.

The organisation predicted that this success is likely to continue in the coming year, driven in part by the rising demand for smartphones and connected devices, such as machine-to-machine equipment and embedded laptops.

In addition, the research claimed that the focus of telecommunications infrastructure growth will be mobile broadband, as mature markets see the increased roll-out of high-speed packet access systems.

Courtney Munroe, group vice president of worldwide telecommunications at IDC, predicted: 'The expanding demographics of smartphones and new operating systems, the arrival of mobile broadband and the explosive growth of applications and content are combining to reshape the landscape of mobile telecommunications.'

Recently, market research firm TeleGeography predicted that companies will increasingly consider VoIP to be the communication tool of choice, replacing traditional landline services.
