Govt attempts to fight cyber crime

The government has launched a drive to tackle scams which use the internet and email to dupe their victims, which may interest those in IT security consultant jobs.

Consumer minister Kevin Brennan announced that a specialist cyber enforcement team will be formed to deal with cyber scams, while Trading Standards will be awarded extra funding to deal with the crimes.

The taskforce will look into fake products and the rogue traders who sell them over the internet, websites which take money but do not ship good and ticket scams for football games, concerts, festivals and other events.

Mr Brennan pointed out that the internet is changing the way people shop, but at the same time creating the risk of criminals developing new ways of conning them.

'Our investment will help the [Office of Fair Trading] and Trading Standards to put in place the new specialist teams, training and technology required to take the fight to these criminals,' he commented.

Last month, Microsoft industry solutions director for retail David Gruehn said that retailers need to make better use of technology to improve their relationship with customers.
