Annie Stevens, a managing partner at executive coaching firm ClearRock, told CNNMoney.com that more employers are using phone interviews as a convenient way of screening applicants.
'The first five minutes of a phone interview are the most important, since only about two out of ten people will still be under consideration beyond that,' she explained.
Ms Stevens recommended that IT job applicants make sure they are prepared well in advance of the interview so they are prepared to make the best use of the limited time they have to impress.
The expert also told the news provider that candidates should attempt to project their enthusiasm for the position during the conversation, while having a list of prepared questions for the interviewer will demonstrate their interest.
Other companies seem to be happy using recruitment agencies to locate suitable applicants, after a poll by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation found 91 per cent of firms are happy with the service they receive.
