Recruitment expert Felix Wetzel predicted that the popularity of social networking websites will increase in the coming years and this will be attractive to employers wanting to find out more about applicants.
'I think the future will see more employers using online sources to 'screen' potential recruits. I think it will always be used alongside other methods such as CVs, telephone interviews, assessment days and references,' he commented.
Mr Wetzel advised candidates to vet their online profiles to ensure they have not made any remarks or posted pictures which could put off a potential employer.
The commentator also predicted that job applicants will start to set up professional profiles to show themselves in the best possible light with firms.
Last week, Microsoft found that 64 per cent of human resources managers think it is OK to view a candidate's online profile, while 41 per cent have turned someone down for a job because of information they found.
