A report by industry researcher Gartner suggested that the rise in popularity of microblogging website Twitter has led many companies to consider using an enterprise version of the platform.
The organisation predicted that the majority of small businesses will be engaged in the activity by 2012, using it for purposes such as updating consumers, sharing information between colleagues and providing fast answers to questions.
Jeffrey Mann, research vice president for Gartner, commented: 'However, it will be very difficult for microblogging as a stand-alone function to achieve widespread adoption within the enterprise. Twitter's scale is one of the reasons for its popularity.'
He explained that for this reason, standalone microblogging products are unlikely to be effective when used by businesses.
Gartner recently claimed that IT departments need to demonstrate that they can generate value in times of recovery as well as save money in a recession.
