CVs 'need to avoid waffle'

Those considering new IT jobs need to ensure that their CV is not clogged with irrelevant information, it has been suggested.

Gareth Lloyd, director of career development consultant Workthing, said more than 60 per cent of CVs could include so much waffle that they are rejected immediately by recruiters.

'First impressions count. In a normal CV, candidates have two pages to sell themselves, but so many CVs waste time and space on waffle and jargon,' he commented.

The expert also suggested that main assertions which put off recruiters are claims of being motivated, able to work alone or in teams, having good timekeeping, being enthusiastic and having reading as a hobby.

Mr Lloyd added that a good resume should focus on an applicant's skills, achievements and experience, rather than trying to describe them with a list of adjectives.

Recruitment expert Felix Wetzel recently claimed that more candidates will increasingly set up professional social networking profiles to show potential employers.
