Website designers 'need to engage customers'

Firms should ensure their online sites are set up to grab customers' attention, which may be advice for those in website designer jobs.

Recently, broadband.co.uk revealed that average broadband speeds increased by 22 per cent during 2009, rising from 3.667Mbps at the beginning of the year to 4.4478Mbps by the end.

Leigh Whitney, managing director of digital agency Design UK, claimed that the average internet user now has less patience with websites, as they can easily shift their attention to another if they are more engaging.

'A website must be able to get visitors to the information that they are looking for and allow them to consume that content easily and in an engaging way,' he explained.

The expert said that a good website will hold onto the viewer's attention by using clear signposting and design features which draw their attention to the most important parts of the page.

Mr Whitney also claimed that websites must meet the needs of different types of internet shopper, such as 'explorers' who like browsing and 'trackers' looking for a specific product.
