IDC has released its report and identified 5.8 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions that could be cut by 2020 through the greater use of information and communication technologies.
Roberta Bigliani, research director at IDC Energy Insights, claims that these advances could be rolled out in four economic sectors, including energy generation and distribution, transport, buildings and industry.
'Any goals to reduce energy consumption, for example, will be accelerated by using network-based solutions as a foundation,' she states.
Ms Bigliani also highlights the added ability to monitor and manage energy use, suggesting that the full potential of the sector has not been rolled out yet, which could lead to a rise in the number of people using IT recruitment.
Vernon Turner, senior vice president of IDC's enterprise infrastructure, consumer and telecom research wing, recently claimed that the company's ICT Sustainability Index - which will be released on December 10th - could help countries use these technologies to reduce their carbon footprint.
